As kids grow up they see several changes happening in their body. One of these changes is very visible and might be a difficult one for them- the growth of hair all over their bodies. As parents, it is imperative to support and guide them through these phases of life. Starting a conversation with them might be awkward and tough, but it is important nonetheless. You need to ensure that you provide them with a safe space and encourage open communication as they deal with these changes. It is also essential to highlight that body hair is natural and whether they wish to remove it, or not, will always be their choice. Be supportive and help them feel informed and comfortable.

Here are some conversations starters to guide your young ones through this journey:

“I noticed you have some new hair growing on your body. How do you feel about it? Is there anything you’d like to know or talk about?”

“I remember when I was your age, I started noticing hair on my upper lip. It felt strange at first. Do you have any questions about hair on your upper lip or any other facial hair?”

“I shave my underarms to keep them smooth. Have you ever thought about removing hair from your underarms or any other body areas?”

“Some guys choose to trim their facial hair to keep it neat and tidy. Have you ever thought about trimming your beard or mustache?”

Remember to keep the conversation open and encourage your child to share their thoughts and questions. Be ready to provide guidance, reassurance, and information as they explore different options for hair removal.

The most commonly used and safe methods of hair removal and grooming are:

  1. Trimming: It involves cutting hair to a desired length using scissors or clippers. It’s a simple and non-permanent way to control hair length and maintain a neat appearance.
  2. Shaving: It is a common method of hair removal using a razor or electric shaver. You can guide your child on proper shaving techniques, emphasizing the importance of using a clean razor, shaving cream, and moisturizing after shaving.
  3. Waxing: Waxing is a popular hair removal method that involves applying warm or cold wax to the skin and then removing it, along with the hair, in one swift motion. It provides longer-lasting results compared to shaving.
  4. Hair Removal Creams: These are chemical-based products that break down the protein structure of the hair, allowing it to be easily wiped away. They offer a painless hair removal option, but it’s important to follow the instructions carefully and perform a patch test to check for any allergic reactions.
  5. Beard Grooming: If your son has facial hair, discuss beard grooming techniques with him. This can include using beard oils or balms to keep the beard soft and well-maintained.

This dialogue is an opportunity to instill body positivity, self-acceptance, and a healthy approach to personal grooming as they grow. It is important for your child to have this guidance in their growing up years.
